Friend, I don’t have to tell you that this is a concerning time for the trans community in this country. 2021 was a record year for anti-trans violence, anti-trans laws have been passed in many states, trans-centric books have been banned from schools, and misinformation and fearmongering is running rampant.
But in the middle of all that, love still wins. Below is a heartwarming and inspiring story of a trans love story that PFLAG SDC helped make happen. Do you have a story of how PFLAG has inspired, aided, or just stood by you? Send it to newsletter editor Louise Julig at ljulig@pflag.com and we might feature it in an upcoming newsletter. We’d love to hear your stories!
PFLAG Stands By Transgender Love🏳️⚧️♥️
By Tiki Inacay Posey
Our story is one of love triumphant. PFLAG San Diego County, in its own unique way, has been a part of this journey. Our wedding is the tale of love, community, and support.
Although finding love was not one of my goals in 2017, I did. I started attending Alliant International University with coursework toward a doctoral degree and was awarded a PFLAG scholarship the following year. PFLAG has been a part of my love and academic journey ever since.
I met Kasia Celeste Posey during my first year in grad school at a karaoke contest. She looked different back then… she had just started to transition, and despite her rugged exterior, I saw the lady beneath the facade. She was absolutely stunning. No, it was not love at “first sight.” It was the love of a lifetime, from the start. I fell in love with the tender woman I held close to my heart.
We struggled to find a place of acceptance for our love, and began to feel the hate on all sides. Many cisgender people were against our love and even some members of the transgender community, but PFLAG was there. Together, we took this as an opportunity to provide awareness through workshops on “Transgender Love Stories.” Annette Ottone (PFLAG SDC Vice President and AAPI support group co-facilitator) attended one of our first trainings on Transgender Military people.
Over the years, I have partnered with PFLAG through presentations, research, and community. When my mother died, I grieved and attended the PFLAG SDC AAPI support group. When our families rejected our love, Annette stood in the gap until my family could heal the pains of transphobia.
On Sunday, May 15, 2022, I married my best friend. Annette drove 5-1/2 hours to attend and help me get ready. We even took some time to attend the beginning of PFLAG SDC’s AAPI meeting so I could explain my formal Filipino attire and talk about the wedding. During the recessional, our wedding party danced and sang to Annette playing her guitar and a vocalist singing, “Stand by Me.” Thank you Annette and PFLAG for standing by me and our love. We made it, in many ways, because of you.

Tiger’s Pictionary With Sister Ida Know
Although the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been there for PFLAG SDC for years, Sister Ida Know (pictured above), is a big-time supporter. She is currently co-hosting Tiger’s Pictionary. What is that, you ask? It is played like Pictionary, only with several twists. When: every Tuesday evening from 7:30-10:00 pm. Where: #1 Fifth Avenue, 3845 Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest. You may purchase raffle tickets which gives you a chance to win fantastic prizes donated by local community businesses. That is how funds are raised with donations going to worthy groups and organizations in the San Diego LGBTQ+ Community. Over the past 11 years, they have raised over $100,000. Part of the fun is that there are no teams, and when someone correctly guesses a clue, they receive a free ticket for the raffle. It is known as a FUNraiser, with the emphasis on FUN!

First PFLAG SDC Book Club Meeting A Success!
PFLAG San Diego County had its inaugural book club meeting on May 24th where we discussed Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen, by Jazz Jennings. We had a lively and informative discussion and are looking forward to reading more books together.
Our next selection will be the graphic memoir Gender Queer: A Memoir, by Maia Kobabe. We’ll meet in late July, so keep an eye out in the July newsletter for the exact date and time.
Gender Queer has the distinction of being the #1 most-banned or challenged book of 2021, according to Book Riot. It’s no coincidence that half of the top ten deal with themes of sexuality and/or LGBTQIA+ identity. Let’s find out what all the fuss is about — join us at the next PFLAG SDC Book Club meeting!
If you buy the book on Amazon, be sure to sign up for Amazon Smile first (see how at the end of the newsletter) so your purchase benefits PFLAG SDC. If you’re more of an indie bookstore person, you can find it on Louise’s Bookshop.org shop (proceeds will benefit Strong-Hearted Native Women’s Coalition as well as indie bookstores) or you can request it at any local bookstore or library. If audiobooks are more your thing, check out the indie-supporting Libro.com.
PFLAG SDC in Solidarity with Solana Beach LGBTQIA+ Students
Speaking of challenged books, the Solana Beach School District Board has voted to make it harder for students to have access to diverse books that include LGBTQIA+ themes and characters, including gender-affirming books. The school board instituted a policy which creates new, separate bookshelves for materials which they deem to be vaguely “instructive in nature, take a particular position on a debatable topic, or require additional adult facilitation.” The students could have access to some of these books with a parent’s permission. North County LGBTQ Resource Center is working with the ACLU and TransFamily Support Services to challenge the legality of what the district is doing. They have asked organizations to sign a statement to oppose the school district’s ban on these books. PFLAG SDC has signed the statement of support.
🏳️⚧️ Pledge to Take the 2022 U.S. Trans Survey (also includes allies)
Although the survey was to be available in March, it is now scheduled to roll out sometime in the summer. You are still requested to pre-register, which will ensure you are sent the survey as soon as it’s released
The U.S. Trans Survey (USTS) is the largest survey of trans people in the United States. The USTS documents the lives and experiences of trans people in the U.S. and U.S. territories. The request is for all trans people ages 16 and up to complete. It’s inclusive of people of all trans identities, including binary and nonbinary trans identities, and also includes allies of the trans community. It’s no secret that transgender people face discrimination and violence throughout society, from their family growing up, in school, at work, by homeless shelters, by doctors, in emergency rooms, before judges, by landlords, and police officers.
